ATO targets Brisbane based small businesses

Commencing October 2019 the Australian Taxation Office is sending an audit task force to the inner suburbs of Brisbane after several tip offs from community members that businesses were partaking in the black economy. The black economy includes business that are demanding cash only sales, not paying appropriate employee entitilements, under-reporting sales or remunerating staff with cash 'under the table'.

Over 400 businesses located in Teneriffe, New Farm, Newstead & Fortitude Valley will be targeted in the ATO officers blitz. Industries expected to be investigated in these subrubs include those in food services, computer system services, pharmaceuticals, creative arts, postal & delivery services, personal care, gardnening and cleaning services.
