ATO targets systemic abuse of work related deductions

A submission to a parliamentary committee highlights that millions of Australians illegally claimed work related expenses in the past financial year. The ATO has published that such claims have cost the Crown 2.5 billion a year which is more than the cost of multinational tax avoidance.

The ATO has indicated that changes will commence in data matching and asking for substantiation of more claims effective immediately. Deductions such as internet and telephone costs, travel, clothing and car deductions are on the radar of the ATOs audit team.
