Within the last two weeks many Australians have received an email from the address - returns@ato.com.au claiming that a tax refund of $286.22 AUD is owing to them.

GMD Accounting wishes to advise all clients that this email,entitled 'TAX REFUND NOTIFICATION', is a scam. 

The Australian Taxation Office has confirmed that the email is not authentic, and have stated that under no circumstances will they ever ask for taxpayers bank account details via the internet. 

Please be vigilant when accessing your emails this week. The email is commonly being delivered to generic email address such as admin@xxx and info@xxx.
