The Taxable Payment Reporting System is an anti tax evasion program that first applied to the construction and building industry. It requires entities to report to the ATO payments they make to contractors & subcontractors. The ATO then uses this information for data matching to ensure contractors that received income in this industry are declaring it in their tax returns.

QLD's new Additional Foreign Acquirer Duty

The QLD State government implemented more changes than any other state or territory this year in relation to property ownership and acquisition in the Sunshine State. One of the key changes is the news that foreign buyers of QLD based real estate will from 1 July 2018 be hit with a 7% transfer duty, formerly known as stamp duty, up from only 3%. This new duty rate will apply to foreign buyers regardless of legal ownership structure.

ATO extends SMSF lodgement deadline

Due to significant changes in SMSF legislation the ATO has granted SMSF's a tax return lodgement deadline of 2 July 2018 for 2017 Financial Year Returns. This provides trustees with an additional 7 weeks to consider and make an election on their options in relation to CGT relief as a result of the $1.6 million transfer balance cap. We recommend contacting your GMD team member to ensure sufficient time is available to prepare your funds requirements, consider your options in relation to CGT relief and undertake your annual SMSF audit.

Notifiable Data Breach Scheme. Are you prepared?

The passing of the Privacy Amendment (Notifiable Data Breaches) Act 2017 established a Notifiable Data Breaches (NDB) scheme in Australia. The NDB scheme requires organisations covered by the Australian Privacy Act 1988 (Privacy Act) to notify any individuals likely to be at risk of serious harm by a data breach. This notice must include recommendations about the steps that individuals should take in response to the data breach. The Australian Information Commissioner must also be notified. Organisations will need to be prepared to conduct quick assessments of suspected data breaches to determine if they are likely to result in serious harm.
